Chaplain Corner - April 2018

April 1, 20178

From the Chaplain’s Pen ..........................…………………………………… Chaplain Al Lowe

We are now into April.  Personally, my birthday is past (72 Yrs), my anniversary is past (52 yrs), my wife had hip replacement surgery; and on the theological side of the month, the season of Lent, the Week of Passion, the crucifixion, death, burial, resurrection (Easter) is past. That certainly is a lot to consider for the first quarter of the year.

April brings with it several District meetings, most – if not all – will be concerned with the election of the officers that will lead us through the coming year.  And this includes the State Convention coming up in June!! I bring up the election of officers for two reasons. First of all, one must be present to vote for the Post and District officers, and second as a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, I will respectfully follow the guidance of the officers elected. Both are my right and both are my duty!

The VFW constitutes an organization of men and women who served in a foreign war.  I did in Vietnam and in Iraq.  But the VFW is always a “Good Neighbor” in nearly every county and city in Texas.  When the hurricane came through last year, many VFW Comrades served to help – and some remain helping.  When a tornado hits, the VFW are among the first on the helping field.  And there is more of the community involvement of the VFW.  I am especially proud of our work with students continuing their education through the Voice of Democracy and the “Take a Veteran to School”.  And I am especially proud when I see Comrades working at the various locations promoting Buddy Poppies.  And I am especially proud when I visit my brothers and sisters in the hospital, and many who read this note are among the hundreds who visit – and have been visited.  And for sure, who is not proud when we go to the burial of a Comrade and share this honor to a Comrade with many other Comrades from Posts and Districts.

This is what we do.  And probably most of the activities listed are a result of our elected officers.  Thus, the importance of YOUR participation in your Post, District, and State Conventions. I urge all to be active in the overall program of the VFW – and in this case, being active in your Post and District elections.

Thanks again; and I will see you down range.

Blessings,

Al Lowe
