Chaplain Corner - July 2018

July 1, 2018

From the Chaplain’s Pen ……………………………………………………. Chaplain Al Lowe

As amazing as it may seem, we enter the month of July next week.  I hear a lot of people use July as some sort of date or time concerning the United States. True enough the Declaration of Independence was written in July 1776, but the fact of the matter is that it was in 1775 that a very small group of men – no women, no Africans, every man was a land owner – came together in Philadelphia to “redo” the Articles being used to govern the colonies. As it turned out these fifty-five men, on their own, disposed of the Articles in place and wrote the Constitution. The marvel of our Constitution is that it begins with the word “WE” as the United States of America is a government OF the people – not of the individual.

So, as we gather to eat the hot dogs and drink the suds of a diet coke, we must remember our responsibility of being a good citizen of this great country. This fall we will vote for those who will be our leaders – notice the personal pronouns of “WE” and “OUR”. Our country is unique. No one is born into monarchy – WE the people elect those who will lead us. And no one has dictatorial rights – WE the people elect those who will lead us.

July is an important month on the 200+ year old calendar of our Country. Get out with your citizen brothers and sisters and celebrate. Rejoice and be glad.  And in a couple of months, VOTE.

And between now and then – perhaps you can identify a veteran who has the need of being a Comrade in the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
