From the Chaplain’s Pen………………………………………....………………… Dr. Al Lowe

We turn another page on our calendar.  In Texas, we turn from Winter (be it ever so cold) to Spring and Summer (and it will be hot!)  And June brings with it a host of opportunities and events, not the least of which is the VFW State Convention in Houston.

I do hope many reading this note will get to venture to Houston and the convention.  I have been several times, and find it interesting how many Comrades I have met – from all over the state.  I have done quite a bit of travelling this past year, visiting Districts and their District meetings.  Many of those people, both Comrades and Auxiliary will attend the meetings in Houston.  It is at the meetings where I can learn about the workings of the Department; and every year I learn something different.  Just when I think it is working and I know how it works, something else comes along, and I feel like I remain at the start.

This year, District 14 has two comrades running for a state office.  Both are from Post 4008.  Roger DeWeese is a candidate for State Junior Vice Commander and I am a candidate for State Chaplain.

From every candidate at Post, District, Department, being a candidate of any office is essentially telling the Comrades that we can handle the responsibilities of the office for which we are running.  This attitude carries into our responsibilities as members of the VFW.  Our mission is to serve our community by serving our fellow Veterans.  Each of us has that ability, unique to the VFW, to serve community and Veteran.  We just must step out and do it.

This begins with being active in the service first at our Post and then possibly at District, Department, and even at the National Level.  The invitation here for all who may read this note is to get out and get active in the overall ministry of the VFW.  There are so many issues that ONLY YOU can accomplish – if and only if you are active in the service to Veterans.

I hope to see many of you in Houston, and through the year at District and Post meetings.
