From the Chaplain’s Pen………………………………………....………………… Dr. Al Lowe

Here we are in March.  I am not too sure if March has “come in” like a lamb or a lion.  While the temperatures are in the mid-60s, the wind in virtually howling.  It is times like this that we should be checking on our fellow Veterans.

Today, March 1, is also Ash Wednesday.  In the Christian Church, this day is celebrated across the world as the beginning of the Season of Lent, a period of 40 days (not counting Sundays) until Easter Sunday; this year Easter is the 16th day of April.

These 40 days are called Lent.  Many think this to be a time to “give up” something like smoking, drinking, cussing, throwing rocks at dogs or kicking cats.  But Lent is something more than that, more serious.  This is the time for all believers to consider their response to the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.  First of all, how have you (and I) reacted to the command of Christ to “Love the Lord your God with all your mind, heart, and soul, AND to Love one another.”

I am especially concerned with Veterans.  I am of the elderly-crowd of vets, having served in Vietnam.  We are getting older, and our bodies are beginning to break down, not doing what they should be doing, or overdoing something else.  And many of our ranks are experiencing the final roll-call.  How about our personal actions in caring for Veterans?

While the push right now is to increase our membership – to which I fully agree – it is also a time when we should be caring more and more for one another.  This is not difficult; make a phone call, make a home visit.  When a Vet is in the hospital, make a hospital visit.

So, during this time of Lent, let all of us consider our responsibility to take care of one another, to love one another as the Veteran Brothers and Sisters that we are.
