Here it is November and all that happens. First and foremost, I do pray that YOU voted on November 8. This is very important for our nation and the VFW cause. We – all of us, veterans and spouses – have paid the price for the opportunity to vote and there is absolutely no excuse for us not to vote. Enough preaching!
The month of November brings three birthdays to this family. My eldest daughter, my son, and one grandson all have birthdays in November. So I guess I will have to write some cards and stuff those cards with that gift everyone wants - $$$.
November is also Thanksgiving. We seem to have fantasized this holiday to the extreme. I can assure all of us that the times were very difficult. There were virtually no medicines, no plumbing, no electricity, and most of the people could neither read nor write. And only white men could vote; and in some colonies, only white landholding men. All in all, it was a very difficult time in which to live and form this nation of the United States.
I remember Thanksgiving while I was in Vietnam. And I remember Thanksgiving while on field problems at Ft Riley and Ft Hood in several of the units I served during my Chaplain career on active duty. And I remember my wife coming with me to the Dining Facility in Germany and several Posts in the US, all dressed up and plenty to eat. And my final Thanksgiving was while I was in Iraq and the contract dining facility workers dressed that large facility in memories – which they did not experience as they were not Americans!
Take advantage of your family time this month. I am not sure how I will celebrate, but it is generally at a church or civic organization feeding others. My wife and I will be there, praying all the time for you, my Veteran Brothers & Sisters, in this time of Thanksgiving.
Bible Verse Of The Month
